SALADO, Texas — A tragic multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in Salado early Sunday morning claimed the life of 24-year-old Robert Martin of Dallas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The fatal incident occurred around 3:38 a.m. on August 3, when Martin was driving a 2020 Toyota RAV northbound on IH-35. Authorities say Martin struck a deer, which disabled his vehicle and left it stalled in the middle lane of the highway.
Shortly after, a delivery truck traveling in the same direction collided with the back of Martin’s disabled vehicle. The impact sent Martin’s car vaulting over the center concrete barrier and into the southbound lanes of IH-35, where it was struck again by a 2015 GMC SUV.
Tragically, Robert Martin died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The drivers of the delivery truck and SUV were not injured, officials said.
The crash prompted a response from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, Salado Police Department, and Salado Fire Department. Texas DPS troopers are continuing to investigate the incident.
This heartbreaking accident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife on highways and the risks of vehicle disablement in high-traffic areas. The community extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Robert Martin during this difficult time.
