FAMU Mourns the Tragic Loss of Ronnie Burns, 22-Year-Old Computer Science Student Killed in Houston Crash

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M University is heartbroken by the devastating loss of Ronnie Burns, a beloved fourth-year computer science student, who tragically died in a fiery car crash early Saturday morning in Houston’s Midtown. He was just 22 years old.

Ronnie, originally from Dallas, Texas, was a passenger in a white Lexus when the vehicle was struck by a speeding black Ford F-150 at the intersection of Smith Street and Elgin Street around 2 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department. The collision occurred after Harris County Precinct 7 deputies observed the pickup truck crash into two parked cars and flee the scene. Authorities say the driver then ran multiple red lights before fatally crashing into the Lexus, which spun into a building and burst into flames.

Despite the valiant efforts of first responders, Ronnie Burns and his friend, 23-year-old Jayden Flemming, died at the scene. The driver of the F-150, who appeared intoxicated, was arrested and is now facing multiple felony charges, including murder.

Ronnie Burns was more than an exceptional student—he was a leader, mentor, and a light within the FAMU community. He served as a Resident Assistant, a TMCF (Thurgood Marshall College Fund) Yard Ambassador, and was recently selected to begin his career as an incoming Software Engineer at Mastercard. His past internship at Liberty Mutual Insurance showcased his talent and drive, where he helped redesign internal systems to improve team efficiency.

On campus, Ronnie’s presence was felt far beyond the classroom. He was an active member of the Alpha Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Vice President Co-Chair of the FWPC Collegiate Prayer Group, and a proud member of Collegiate 100 (100 Black Men of America). His dedication to service, technology, and faith made him a role model to many.

“Ronnie was the kind of student who inspired everyone around him,” said a fellow classmate. “He was thoughtful, brilliant, and always looking out for others. This loss is immeasurable.”

The FAMU community is also mourning the loss of Jayden Flemming, a promising master’s student remembered for his leadership and academic excellence.

Grief counseling and support services are being offered to students, faculty, and staff affected by this tragedy. Plans for a candlelight vigil and memorial service in honor of Ronnie Burns will be announced in the coming days.

Florida A&M University extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of Ronnie Burns and Jayden Flemming. Their legacies will continue to live on through the lives they touched.
