MAUI, HI – An 18-year-old man from Makawao, identified as Robert Carvalho, tragically died on Sunday after falling from a waterfall along the scenic Hana Highway, Maui police confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near mile marker 6. According to police, Carvalho was hiking with friends when he lost his balance and fell approximately 120 feet to the base of the waterfall.
The Maui Fire Department’s Air Hekili helicopter was dispatched to reach him. Despite the rapid response, Carvalho was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
Initial investigations show no signs of foul play, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
In a statement, the Maui Police Department extended its deepest condolences to Carvalho’s family and friends during this difficult time.
The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers present in Hawaii’s natural landscapes, even for the most experienced hikers.
