Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. — Authorities have released details following a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday evening near Glen Oak and Prospect Road.

According to the Peoria Police Department, officers were dispatched around 5:15 p.m. in response to reports of a suspicious man in the area. Upon arrival, officers encountered an adult male reportedly swinging a wooden bat aggressively.

Police say the man struck an officer during the confrontation. In response, one officer deployed a taser, while another fired their service weapon. Despite immediate medical efforts at the scene, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The incident unfolded during National Night Out, a community-building event aimed at strengthening police-community relations and promoting neighborhood unity.

Per standard procedure, the Illinois State Police will conduct an independent investigation, with findings to be reviewed by the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, and the investigation remains ongoing.
