El Paso, TX — Authorities have identified the two people killed in a fatal head-on crash near Tornillo on Saturday afternoon, August 9.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO), the collision occurred around 2 p.m. at the intersection of MF Aguilera and OT Smith. Deputies arriving on scene discovered that a Nissan Titan and a Mazda CX-5 had collided head-on.
The driver of the Mazda, 51-year-old Maria Escudero Loya, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, 21-year-old Mayrin Perez, was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The driver of the Nissan was also taken to a hospital for treatment, though the severity of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Investigators have not yet determined whether speed played a role in the crash. The Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains ongoing.
