NORTH WINDHAM, Maine — Authorities are urging residents to shelter-in-place and lock their doors after a shooting Friday afternoon in North Windham left one person injured. The suspect remains at large.

According to police, the shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Route 302. The suspect fled in a silver car toward Raymond. Investigators later located what they believe to be the suspect’s vehicle in a Dunkin’ parking lot in Raymond, but the gunman was not found.

Residents in the area from Route 85 in Raymond to Whites Bridge Road in Windham, including surrounding side streets, are being asked to stay indoors and report any suspicious activity to 911. Although Route 302 reopened around 6:30 p.m., the shelter-in-place order remains active.

Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said the suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous. “It’s possible this individual… could have gotten a ride, either hitchhiking, taxi, Uber, or with a friend. We’re searching the area and trying to make sure we find this individual with a firearm before anyone else gets hurt,” Joyce stated.

An alert was sent to Mainers’ phones via the Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS). The Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) confirmed a technical error caused the alert to go statewide instead of remaining geo-fenced to the affected area.

Maine State Police, Windham Police, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office continue to search for the suspect. A joint press conference is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
