Boy, 15, Killed, Another Critically Wounded in South Side Shooting, Police Say

CHICAGO (Aug. 29, 2025) — A violent confrontation in a South Side vacant lot turned deadly Thursday afternoon, leaving one teenager dead and another fighting for his life.

The shooting happened around 3:45 p.m. in the 600 block of West 47th Street, police said. Two boys, ages 12 and 15, became involved in a fight with several people when at least one individual pulled out a handgun and opened fire.

The 12-year-old was shot in the chest, while the 15-year-old, later identified as Alex Durante by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, was struck in the hip. Both victims were rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where Durante was pronounced dead. The 12-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities said no arrests have been made, and detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police have not released descriptions of potential suspects.

The tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about youth violence in Chicago, as families and community members grapple with the devastating loss of a young life and the critical injuries of another.
