Authorities Identify Victims in Jefferson County Murder-Suicide

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. – Authorities have released the names of the two people killed in a tragic murder-suicide in the Corner community late Monday night.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, the victims were identified as Amy Ruth Oestenstad, 52, and Elton James Barks Jr., 55. Deputies responded to the 3500 block of White Road around 11:41 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.

When first responders arrived, they found both Oestenstad and Barks suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics pronounced them dead at the scene.

Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said their preliminary findings indicate that Oestenstad and Barks were in a relationship. Evidence suggests that Barks shot Oestenstad before turning the gun on himself.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, but at this time, they are not searching for additional suspects.

This heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock as family, friends, and neighbors mourn the loss of two lives.
