BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Authorities have released the identity of the young man who died following a fatal shooting on Saturday in Belleville.
The St. Louis Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the victim as 19-year-old DreShawn Mathis. According to spokesperson Tara Rick, Mathis was pronounced dead at 9:23 p.m. on August 30 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
Belleville police said they were initially dispatched to Memorial Hospital around 7:20 p.m. Saturday after Mathis arrived seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds. He was later transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators determined Mathis had been shot in the 500 block of North 38th Street. The case remains under active investigation, and no additional details have been released at this time.
This marks the fourth fatal shooting in Belleville in 2025. Two of those cases were ruled non-criminal — one as self-defense and another as accidental — while a February shooting resulted in first-degree murder charges against Joseph P. Flagg of East St. Louis in the death of 16-year-old Di’Rico V. Washington.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the latest case to contact Belleville police as the investigation continues.
