COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Columbus community is grieving the tragic loss of Ja’Kobe “Kobe” Smith, a newly sworn firefighter with Columbus Fire & EMS, who died by suicide on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Authorities say Smith was found in his apartment around 9 a.m., after a call brought law enforcement to the scene. His sudden passing has left his family, friends, and fellow first responders devastated.
Smith, who grew up in Columbus, was remembered as a kindhearted son, devoted teammate, and loyal friend. In June, he proudly took the oath to serve with Columbus Fire & EMS, beginning what many believed would be a long and meaningful career. Colleagues described him as hardworking, eager to learn, and always smiling.
In a heartfelt statement, Columbus Fire & EMS said: “Ja’Kobe was part of our family, and we are heartbroken by his loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Loved ones revealed that Smith shared a cryptic Facebook post shortly before his death, leaving behind difficult questions for family members still grappling with their grief.
His passing is a sobering reminder of the mental health struggles faced by many first responders. Community leaders are urging greater awareness, support, and resources for those on the front lines.
