FAYETTE COUNTY, Pa. — The search for a missing 9-year-old girl has ended in tragedy after authorities confirmed that Renesmay Eutsey was found dead Thursday morning.
Pennsylvania State Police said Eutsey was discovered partially submerged in the Youghiogheny River near Smithton. The child, who had been reported missing from Dunbar Borough early Wednesday, was the subject of an intensive overnight search involving drones, K-9 units, and specialized teams.
Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele confirmed to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that Eutsey had died. Shortly afterward, state police announced that Kourtney Malinda Eutsey, 31, of Dunbar—described as the girl’s adoptive parent—has been charged with criminal homicide in connection with her death.
Authorities had initially issued a missing person advisory after Renesmay was last seen in the area of 3rd Street in Dunbar Borough. Investigators later revealed inconsistencies in the timeline provided by her foster mother, who did not report the child missing until nearly 1 p.m. Wednesday, hours after she was last believed to be at home.
Officials described Renesmay as developmentally disabled and said she was considered at special risk of harm.
The case remains under active investigation.
