Police: Mount Washington Gunman Killed Three Amid ‘Romantic Interest’ Before Taking Own Life

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Police have released new details about the deadly Mount Washington shooting that left three people dead and the gunman fatally wounded.

According to investigators, 26-year-old Samuel Ericksen opened fire on August 31 near Beacon Street and Glade Avenue around 1:30 p.m., killing three young adults before turning the gun on himself.

The victims have been identified as Eden Adugna, 22, and Feven Adugna, 20—siblings who both worked at Good Samaritan Hospital—as well as 27-year-old Bemnet Deresse. Eden and Feven were pronounced dead at the scene, while Deresse was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he later died.

Cincinnati Police Lt. Jonathan Cunningham said Ericksen’s motive was personal, not hate-driven. “The offender knew at least one of the victims, with whom he had a romantic interest,” Cunningham explained.

Ericksen initially survived his self-inflicted gunshot wound but succumbed to his injuries on September 2.

Authorities continue to piece together the circumstances that led to the tragic violence, but they have confirmed the case is not being investigated as a hate crime.
