Woolwich, ME – A tragic head-on collision on U.S. Route 1 early Friday morning claimed the life of a Rockland man and left another driver injured.

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred at approximately 4:22 a.m. on September 5, 2025, between the Montsweag Restaurant and the intersection of Mountain Road. Both vehicles involved caught fire following the impact.

Investigators say a 2022 Toyota Tundra, driven by Alex C. Colson, 38, of Rockland, was traveling northbound when it crossed the centerline into the southbound lane. A 2003 Freightliner box truck, operated by Scott Rice, 60, of Waldoboro, was traveling south and attempted to avoid the crash but was unable to.

Colson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Rice managed to escape his vehicle and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Alex Faith is leading the investigation, with crash reconstruction being handled by members of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency crews from Woolwich, Wiscasset, and West Bath Fire/Rescue responded, along with Bath Police, Topsham Police, and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit.

U.S. Route 1 was closed in both directions for approximately four hours and reopened to traffic at 8:30 a.m.
