Jayvion’tae Cox Identified as Victim in Accidental Evansville Shooting

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Authorities in Vanderburgh County have identified the teenager killed in an accidental shooting earlier this week. The coroner’s office confirmed the victim as 14-year-old Jayvion’tae Cox, who tragically lost his life Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to a residence on East Cherry Street near South Evans Avenue just before 4 p.m. for reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Cox suffering from a gunshot wound. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene before medical aid could be provided.

Investigators determined the shooting was accidental. According to Evansville police, another juvenile was handling a firearm when it discharged, striking Cox. That juvenile, whose identity has not been released, now faces charges of reckless homicide and dangerous possession of a firearm.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office ruled Cox’s death the result of the gunshot wound. Officials stressed the incident highlights the dangers of unsecured firearms in homes with children.

The tragedy has left neighbors and the broader community shaken, reigniting conversations around firearm safety and prevention. Authorities continue to investigate how the juvenile obtained the weapon and are urging families to secure firearms with locks or safes to avoid similar tragedies.

Cox’s family and friends are left mourning a vibrant 14-year-old whose life ended too soon.
