PORTAGE COUNTY, OH — Authorities are investigating a tragic incident over Labor Day weekend that claimed the life of 32-year-old Skyler Correll, who died after a cliff diving accident at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park on August 30.
According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Correll had been visiting the park with his girlfriend when the accident occurred. Witnesses said he attempted a flip from a cliff approximately 20 feet high before hitting the water with significant impact. His face and chest struck the surface forcefully, leaving him briefly bleeding before he slipped beneath the water.
A lifeguard on duty immediately entered the quarry, assisted by a second responder. Together, they pulled Correll from the water within minutes and began CPR. Emergency crews arrived shortly after, but despite their efforts, Correll was pronounced dead at the hospital before 5:30 p.m.
Investigators said alcohol consumption may have been a factor, but no foul play is suspected. Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is a popular spot for swimming and cliff diving, though authorities warn the activity carries inherent risks.
Correll’s death is a sobering reminder of how quickly recreation can turn tragic. The investigation remains ongoing.
