FERGUSON, Mo. — The Ferguson Police Department has identified the victim of a Sunday morning homicide as Dorian Johnson, who was nationally known as the friend of Michael Brown Jr.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 9000 block of Abaco Drive around 8:30 a.m. on September 7, 2025. When they arrived, they located an adult Black male suffering from gunshot wounds. Johnson succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Police confirmed that one individual is currently in custody as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information to contact Ferguson Police detectives at 314-522-3100.
Officials also addressed false rumors circulating online, clarifying that this was not an officer-involved shooting. No Ferguson police officers, or officers from any other agency, were involved beyond responding to and investigating the incident.
Johnson drew national attention in 2014 as the friend walking alongside Michael Brown Jr. when Brown was fatally shot by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, sparking protests and a nationwide movement.
The Ferguson Police Department says more details will be released as the investigation develops.
