John Frueh Sr., 91, Identified as Victim in Alpine Township House Fire

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich — Authorities have identified the man who tragically lost his life in an early-morning house fire as 91-year-old John Frueh Sr., the homeowner and sole occupant of the residence.

The fire broke out around 1 a.m. on Sept. 9 at Frueh’s home on 4 Mile Road. A passerby first spotted the flames and alerted authorities. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but by the time crews reached the property, the blaze had already spread extensively. Firefighters were unable to safely enter the home during the height of the fire.

Sadly, Frueh was later confirmed to have died inside. A preliminary autopsy indicated that his death was directly related to the fire, with no signs of foul play. Investigators believe the fire began in the garage before rapidly consuming the rest of the home. The cause and origin remain under investigation, led by the Plainfield Township Fire Investigator with assistance from the Michigan State Police.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences, stating: “We extend our sympathy to the family and friends grieving this loss.”

Frueh’s passing has deeply saddened the Alpine Township community. Neighbors and friends remembered him as a kindhearted, generous man who was always willing to help others.

Longtime friend and neighbor Marvin Andree described Frueh as “very friendly” and recalled fond memories of his helpful nature, such as assisting with tasks like removing bees from his yard. He added that Frueh had been a devoted member of Berlin Baptist Church, where he was seen at services just this past Sunday.

Friends also shared that Frueh had endured the loss of his wife three years ago, relying on his church family for comfort and support. In the wake of his death, the congregation is preparing to honor his memory and celebrate the faith, kindness, and community spirit he exemplified.

For those who knew him, John Frueh Sr. will be remembered not for the tragedy that claimed his life, but for the warmth and generosity he shared throughout his 91 years.
