PAYNE COUNTY, Okla. — A tragic head-on collision early Saturday morning claimed the lives of Fernando Gonzalez, 17, and Lorna R. Stein, 78, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).
The crash happened shortly before 12:20 a.m. on U.S. 177 near 32nd Street. Witnesses told troopers that Gonzalez’s vehicle was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed without its headlights on when it struck a curb. Gonzalez then lost control of the vehicle, crossing into the opposite lane and colliding head-on with a car driven by Stein.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles or individuals were involved.
Officials said the details remain preliminary, and investigators are continuing to piece together the events that led to the deadly crash.
The loss of life has shaken the Payne County community, as the victims represent two generations—a teenager with a future ahead and an elderly woman remembered for her years of life and experience.
OHP urges drivers to remain vigilant and ensure headlights are on at all times when traveling in low-light conditions. The investigation is ongoing.
