CUMBERLAND, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating the death of 50-year-old Billy Sorrow, an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution, who was found dead inside his cell on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025.

Paramedics pronounced Sorrow deceased after he was discovered lying on the floor and unresponsive. Authorities said he had been sharing the cell with another inmate at the time.

“A suspect, also an inmate, has been identified,” Maryland State Police stated. “He has not been charged at this time and is not being identified pending further investigation.”

Troopers from the MSP Homicide Unit responded to the scene around 1:30 p.m., along with investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Intelligence and Investigative Division. The MSP Forensic Sciences Division processed the scene, collecting evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are pending to determine the cause and manner of death. Once complete, the case will be presented to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

Officials emphasize that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and no additional details have been released at this time.
