The East Chicago community is mourning the tragic loss of 25-year-old John Champion Jr. of Chicago, who was fatally stabbed during an incident early Tuesday morning.
At approximately 2:37 a.m. on October 7, 2025, officers with the East Chicago Police Department responded to an apartment located at 3504 Pennsylvania Avenue (Apt. 89). Upon arrival, they found John unresponsive with a stab wound to his lower abdomen. He was rushed to St. Catherine Hospital, where, despite life-saving efforts, he was sadly pronounced deceased.
Authorities took 22-year-old Jatavia Miller of East Chicago into custody at the scene after she admitted to stabbing John during a domestic dispute that escalated into violence.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force and the Lake County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigators (C.S.I.) are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the full details surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
