LYNCHBURG, Va. — Lynchburg Police have confirmed the identity of the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred on Wednesday evening, October 8, 2025, near the 1600 block of 12th Street at the Mr. Food Convenience Store. The victim, 45-year-old Anthony Cupec, was transported by Lynchburg Fire to Lynchburg General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators report that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Cupec and 43-year-old Larry Kersey, who allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Cupec. Kersey initially fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan with black wheels but was later located in the 5000 block of White Oak Drive early Thursday morning. He surrendered without incident and is now facing multiple charges, including:

  • Murder (Va. Code § 18.2-32)
  • Use or Display of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony (Va. Code § 18.2-53.1)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon (Va. Code § 18.2-308.2)

Police have recovered the vehicle used in the incident and it is in LPD custody.
