PETOSKEY, Mich – The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a tragic two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of an 18-year-old Petoskey man Monday evening.
According to Sheriff Matt Leirstein, deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:03 p.m. to the intersection of Intertown and Eppler Roads following reports of a collision involving a motorcycle and a Toyota 4Runner. Upon arrival, first responders determined that the motorcyclist, identified as Samuel Tyler Gross, 18, of Petoskey, had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota 4Runner, identified as 69-year-old Candace Jo Wynn, also of Petoskey, was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital for evaluation but did not sustain any injuries.
Preliminary findings suggest that speed was a contributing factor in the crash, though the incident remains under active investigation. Sheriff Leirstein expressed his condolences, stating, “The Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.”
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Emmet County EMS, the Resort Bear Creek Fire Department, and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Police. Further details will be released as the investigation continues.
