HARPSWELL, Maine — A 78-year-old man has died following a residential fire in Harpswell early Tuesday morning, authorities reported. The Maine Department of Public Safety confirmed that the incident occurred at 1501 Harpswell Neck Road.
According to department spokesperson Shannon Moss, firefighters responded quickly to the scene and began fire suppression efforts. During their work, one individual was discovered inside the home. Emergency responders extricated the person, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has been provisionally identified as Hugh MacFarland, a longtime resident of Harpswell.
“The cause and manner of death will be determined by the chief medical examiner’s office,” Moss stated. She added that the fire caused significant damage to the residence.
Authorities are investigating the origin of the fire, which remains undetermined at this time. Local officials have not released further details regarding the incident.
Hugh MacFarland is mourned by family, friends, and the Harpswell community, who remember him for his life and contributions to the area. Residents are encouraged to follow safety precautions as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding this tragic fire.
