Columbus State University Lecturer Killed After Roommate Mistook Her for Intruder

COLUMBUS, Ga – Authorities have confirmed the identity of a woman who was tragically shot and killed early Monday morning in what police are calling an accidental shooting.

According to the Columbus Police Department, officers responded to a home in the 1600 block of 17th Avenue in the Lakebottom neighborhood around 1:30 a.m., after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered 31-year-old Erica Blascom Anderson, who had been shot by her roommate, who mistakenly believed she was an intruder.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed that Anderson, originally from Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene. The preliminary investigation determined that the incident was accidental and occurred when Anderson returned home unexpectedly late at night.

Anderson was a lecturer in the Department of Theatre & Dance at Columbus State University, where she was admired by students and colleagues alike for her passion, creativity, and kindness.

“She brought warmth and dedication to everything she did — both in the classroom and in the community,” a university spokesperson shared in a statement.

Anderson’s body will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy. The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
