SOUTH LOS ANGELES  — A South Los Angeles middle school was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after reports of a possible gun on campus prompted a swift and massive law enforcement response.

The incident occurred around noon at Los Angeles Academy Middle School and STEAM Magnet, near Slauson Avenue and Avalon Boulevard. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles School Police rushed to the scene after receiving reports that a student might have a firearm.

Authorities say one student was detained after being accused by another of having a gun. However, after an extensive search of the campus, police confirmed that no weapon was found, and no shots were fired.

“All students and staff are safe,” a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District said in a statement. “We are following district safety protocols while law enforcement completes their investigation.”

AIR7 HD footage showed several police vehicles parked outside the school as officers conducted a room-to-room search. The lockdown remained in effect for several hours as a precaution.

Officials say the investigation remains active, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
