LEIGHTON, Ala. – A tragic single-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon claimed the life of a Leighton man, authorities confirmed.
According to officials, the crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. on the 7000 block of Highway 20, near County Line Road and Pruitt Drive. Investigators say the vehicle left the roadway and struck a culvert, resulting in severe damage.
The driver, identified by Colbert County Coroner Justin Gasque as 44-year-old Howard Christian “Hank” Staggs, was transported from the scene by Keller Ambulance Service. Despite lifesaving efforts, Staggs was later pronounced dead at the hospital by attending physicians.
Alabama State Troopers are leading the investigation to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. No further details have been released at this time.
