Woman Killed, Another Critically Injured in Head-On Crash on NC Highway 16 in Wilkes County

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A woman was killed and another person critically injured in a head-on collision Wednesday morning in Wilkes County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened around 7 a.m. on NC Highway 16 near Grindstone Lane. A 2018 Honda CR-V, driven by 53-year-old Kelly Jordan Holleman of North Wilkesboro, was traveling north when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2019 Subaru Forester heading south.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found both vehicles heavily damaged. Holleman died at the scene as a result of her injuries. Troopers confirmed that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Subaru sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to a medical center in Winston-Salem for treatment.

Investigators said that neither speed nor impairment appears to have been a factor in the crash. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident but confirmed that no charges will be filed.

Traffic on Highway 16 was shut down for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene and collect evidence. The roadway has since reopened.
