MERIDIAN, Miss. — A tragic incident unfolded Friday evening in Meridian after a man allegedly shot his grandmother, leading to her death, according to the Meridian Police Department (MPD).
Officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim near Manning Street and 46th Avenue around 5 p.m. When authorities arrived, they discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel from MPD, the Meridian Fire Department, and Metro Ambulance provided aid before transporting the victim to a local hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
The victim was later identified as Sandra Goodwin, 78, of Meridian. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, a man reportedly walked into the Meridian Police Department on 22nd Avenue and confessed to the shooting. Authorities confirmed that the man is the victim’s grandson.
The suspect’s name has not yet been released. Judge Dustin Markham has ordered that the suspect be held without bond, citing public safety concerns. A reevaluation hearing is scheduled for November 3.
A press conference with the Meridian Police Department is set for Monday at 9:30 a.m., where officials are expected to release additional information regarding the ongoing investigation.
