Falls Township, PA — Tragedy struck early Tuesday morning in Falls Township when a man was killed after exiting his disabled vehicle on Route 1 following an earlier crash. Authorities have identified the victim as 38-year-old Jay Kountree of Trenton, whose life was cut short in the devastating incident.

According to the Falls Township Police Department, officers responded at approximately 2:25 a.m. to the northbound lanes of Route 1, just north of the Route 13 overpass, after receiving reports of a pedestrian being struck.

Preliminary findings indicate that Kountree was driving a black Cadillac north on Route 1 when he lost control near the overpass and collided with the concrete lane divider. The vehicle came to rest in the middle of the highway. Moments later, Kountree exited his car — and while standing outside, he was struck by a Lexus ES3 sedan driven by a 30-year-old man, also from Trenton.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Kountree to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he was pronounced deceased from his injuries. A passenger in Kountree’s vehicle sustained minor injuries and sought medical attention. The driver of the Lexus was reportedly unhurt.

Authorities say it remains unclear whether speed, alcohol, or other factors played a role in the crash. The Falls Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate and is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to contact Detective Christopher Iacono at 215-949-9104 or via email at c.iacono@fallstwppd.com.

The fatal crash led to temporary road closures along Route 1 as investigators processed the scene and worked to piece together the sequence of events.

News of Kountree’s death has left his family and friends heartbroken. Those who knew him describe him as a kind, loyal man with a bright smile and a generous heart — someone who worked hard, cared deeply for others, and always found ways to lift people’s spirits.

As the community mourns this unexpected loss, many are reminded of the dangers present on highways and the importance of exercising caution following vehicle breakdowns or collisions.

Jay Kountree’s passing serves as a somber reminder of how quickly life can change. He will be remembered for the love, laughter, and light he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.

Funeral arrangements and obituary details will be announced by his family in the coming days.
