ANKENY, Iowa — Heartbreak has struck the Des Moines community after a tragic crash on Interstate 35 claimed the life of 19-year-old Emilie Vanwinkle on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Emilie was traveling northbound near Ankeny when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the back of a semi-truck parked on the shoulder of the interstate. The impact was severe, and despite the quick response of emergency crews, Emilie was pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported.

Investigators continue to examine the cause of the crash, though early reports suggest that road conditions and speed may have been factors. The crash temporarily shut down lanes on I-35 as authorities worked to reconstruct the scene and clear the roadway.

News of Emilie’s passing has left her family, friends, and the entire Des Moines area in deep mourning. Those who knew her describe her as a bright, kind-hearted young woman whose smile could light up any room. She was known for her compassion, love for her friends and family, and her dreams for the future — dreams that were tragically cut short.

“She had such a gentle heart and a contagious laugh,” one close friend shared. “She made everyone feel special. It doesn’t seem real that she’s gone.”

As the community grieves, the Iowa State Patrol is reminding drivers to exercise caution, especially around stopped vehicles on the shoulder. Even a brief moment of inattention can have devastating consequences.

Emilie’s loss is being felt deeply across the community — a reminder of how fragile life can be. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, as friends and family cling to the joy and light she brought into their lives.

Rest in peace, Emilie Vanwinkle gone too soon, but never forgotten.
