PROVO, Utah – Heartbreak has gripped the Provo community after a tragic accident claimed the life of 2-year-old Claudia Isela Sandoval Martinez on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Provo Police Department, the incident occurred around 1:10 p.m. at the Brough Trailer Court, near 860 W. Columbia Lane. Investigators say two young children were standing near the road with their father, who was fixing a bicycle, when a GMC Yukon suddenly struck them.
Both children were rushed to the hospital by their frantic parents. Sadly, little Claudia did not survive. Her 4-year-old brother, Esequiel, suffered injuries but is now in stable condition.
Police arrested 28-year-old Nereyda Miranda on suspicion of manslaughter following the crash. Investigators reviewed footage showing the SUV traveling quickly before hitting the siblings. Miranda told police she had trash bags on the hood of her vehicle, which likely blocked her view.
Neighbors described the scene as devastating. Longtime resident Cindy Baxter recalled hearing the impact and seeing the father’s anguish as he desperately tried to help his children. “It was heartbreaking,” she said. “Everyone on the street was in shock.”
The Provo Police Department extended their condolences, stating, “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family as they face this unimaginable loss.”
A GoFundMe has been created to support the Sandoval Martinez family with funeral and medical expenses.
Claudia Isela was a sweet and joyful child, full of love and innocence. Her smile brought light into every room she entered, and she will forever be remembered as her family’s little angel.
May her memory live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
