MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Melbourne Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of 70-year-old James Griffin early Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Highland Avenue around 5:33 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. When officers arrived, they found James Griffin suffering from severe injuries. He was immediately transported to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators determined that Griffin had been riding west on Eau Gallie Boulevard in the designated bicycle lane when a light-colored car turned west from Pineapple Avenue and struck him. Witnesses reported that the vehicle had been driving erratically, swerving and squealing its tires before the collision. The driver did not stop and continued westbound, leaving the scene of the crash.

Police have been canvassing the area for security footage and additional witnesses who may have seen the vehicle around the time of the incident. James Griffin, a longtime resident of Melbourne, Florida, is being remembered as a kind, active, and caring member of the community. Those who knew him say he loved cycling and enjoyed the peaceful early morning rides that brought him joy and clarity. His passing has left family, friends, and neighbors heartbroken.
