WICHITA, Kan — A south Wichita neighborhood is in mourning after an 80-year-old woman was killed in a violent stabbing early Friday morning. Police have arrested her 47-year-old daughter in connection with the crime.

According to the Wichita Police Department, officers responded around 7:50 a.m. on October 31 to reports of a cutting at a home in the 1500 block of East Crowley, near Wassall and Hydraulic. When officers arrived, they found the suspect — the victim’s daughter — standing outside the home with cuts on her hands.

Inside, officers made a heartbreaking discovery. 80-year-old Anita Avers was found unresponsive in her bed, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Emergency medical crews rushed her to St. Francis Hospital, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police said the daughter was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries before being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on a charge of First-Degree Murder. Authorities have not released a possible motive at this time.

Neighbors described the family as quiet and kind, expressing deep shock and sadness over the tragedy. “Anita was such a sweet woman,” one neighbor said. “She loved her family and always had a smile. It’s just hard to understand how something like this could happen.”

Detectives continue to investigate the events leading up to the stabbing as the Wichita community grieves the loss of a beloved mother and friend.

The Wichita Police Department urges anyone with additional information about the case to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111.

This tragic loss serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of life — and the unseen struggles that can tear families apart. May Anita Avers rest in peace.
