BOARDMAN, Ohio — A tragic crash on Interstate 680 South claimed the life of a Pennsylvania man Friday evening, according to reports from WKBN and the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
The fatal accident occurred just before 6 p.m. near milepost 12, close to the Route 224 overpass, when 39-year-old Alex Lowry, of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, was involved in a two-vehicle collision.
Investigators say both vehicles were traveling in the left southbound lane when Lowry’s 2014 Dodge Charger struck the rear of a Nissan Rogue. The impact caused Lowry’s car to veer off the left side of the roadway, where it hit a guardrail, then slammed into three concrete bridge supports before overturning.
Lowry was ejected from the vehicle and tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Nissan Rogue also went off the road, striking a guardrail and overturning. The driver of that vehicle was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
OSHP stated that speed is being investigated as a potential factor in the deadly crash. The Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to lead the investigation.
This devastating accident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of seatbelt use and caution while driving. The community mourns the loss of Alex Lowry, whose life was tragically cut short on the roadway.
