Oak Park, IL — Tragedy struck in Oak Park on Sunday afternoon when a man was shot and killed by a family member during a domestic altercation inside a residence. According to officials, the fatal incident occurred around 1:47 p.m. in the 400 block of South Ridgeland Avenue.
A spokesperson for the Village of Oak Park confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call about a shooting involving two brothers. Upon arrival, officers discovered 26-year-old Anthony Brooks suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the shooting stemmed from an altercation between Anthony Brooks and his 23-year-old brother, who both lived in the home. According to reports, another family member instructed the younger brother to unload the firearm and leave it inside before exiting the residence, but moments later, tragedy unfolded.
An employee at a nearby business said he did not hear gunfire but saw a large police presence soon after, including an officer retrieving a long gun from a squad car. “I just waited to see if there was any danger to the public,” the witness said, noting that police activity remained confined to the immediate area as yellow crime scene tape surrounded the home for more than six hours.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Oak Park Police Department for questioning.
Officials say the investigation remains active as detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The Village of Oak Park expressed condolences to the Brooks family, emphasizing that this appears to be an isolated domestic incident with no ongoing threat to the public.
