18-Year-Old Passenger Dies Following Crash on Lerdo Highway in Shafter

BAKERSFIELD, Calif — Authorities have identified the 18-year-old passenger who tragically died following a crash on Lerdo Highway as Abraham Lopez of Shafter, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred on Monday, November 3, 2025, at approximately 6:09 p.m., at the intersection of Lerdo Highway and Scaroni Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the 18-year-old male driver of a 2006 Ford Windstar van failed to stop at a stop sign, leading to a collision with a 2023 Ford F250 pickup, driven by a 23-year-old Shafter man. The impact caused the van to end up partially submerged in a water canal.

First responders, including good Samaritans and local firefighters, worked to rescue those trapped in the van. Abraham Lopez was transported to Kern Medical, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning. The driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries. CHP stated that alcohol or drugs did not appear to be factors in the crash.

The incident has left the Shafter community mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon. Abraham Lopez is remembered as a vibrant young man whose presence brightened the lives of those around him.
