HUNTSVILLE, Ala  — The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) confirmed that the body of 25-year-old Lazarus Howard III, who had been missing since July, was found dead on Wednesday off Highway 20.

Authorities said that preliminary evidence suggests Howard was murdered, though an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death.

According to HPD, Lazarus was reported missing on July 19, after last speaking with his mother on July 10. Following months of investigation, detectives received an anonymous tip that led them to identify 19-year-old Kylan James Haley as a person of interest in the case.

Investigators traveled to Montgomery to interview Haley, which ultimately led them to the discovery of Howard’s body near Highway 20. Based on their findings, authorities obtained a warrant for murder against Haley. The extradition process is currently underway to bring him to Madison County for prosecution.

HPD officials thanked the public for their assistance and urged anyone with additional information about the case to come forward as the investigation continues.
