GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. — Heartbreak fills the community following a tragic crash early Saturday morning on Route 288 at the James River Bridge that claimed the life of 20-year-old Edgar Ruiz Carrillo of Midlothian.
According to Virginia State Police, the incident began shortly after midnight when a sedan struck a barrier on southbound Route 288. Fire crews from Goochland County and Powhatan Fire & Rescue responded, using a fire engine with its emergency lights activated to block the left travel lane and protect the crash scene.
During the response, another sedan — driven by Edgar Ruiz Carrillo — collided with the rear of the Goochland fire engine. Despite wearing his seatbelt, Edgar sustained fatal injuries in the violent crash. The fire engine suffered severe rear-end damage and has been placed out of service. Thankfully, no firefighters were injured in the incident.
Edgar was known by family and friends for his bright spirit, kind heart, and determination to make a difference in every life he touched. At just 20 years old, his life was full of dreams, laughter, and love — memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him best.
As investigators continue to piece together the events of that night, loved ones are left to honor a young man whose time was far too short. May Edgar Ruiz Carrillo rest in eternal peace, and may his family find strength and comfort in the cherished memories he leaves behind.
