DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. — The Delaware County community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Sheriff Tony Skinner, who tragically lost his life early Wednesday morning while assisting a stranded driver along Interstate 69 near Yorktown.
According to officials, the incident occurred in the northbound lanes between State Roads 32 and 26, near mile marker 247, around the early morning hours. Sheriff Skinner had stopped to help a motorist whose vehicle had broken down on the side of the highway when a northbound tractor-trailer struck his patrol vehicle. Despite the swift efforts of emergency responders, he sadly succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office released a heartfelt statement following the tragedy:
“Today, our department and community have lost not only a respected leader but a beloved friend. Sheriff Tony Skinner dedicated his life to serving and protecting others. His compassion, bravery, and commitment to public service will forever be remembered.”
The Indiana State Police are leading the investigation into the crash, reviewing all evidence including vehicle data, road conditions, and dash camera footage to determine the sequence of events that led to the collision.
Sheriff Skinner was known throughout Delaware County and beyond for his unwavering dedication to his community, his kindness, and his steady leadership. Fellow law enforcement officers described him as a man who “led with heart” someone who never hesitated to help others, no matter the hour or circumstance.
As word of his passing spread, tributes began to pour in from across Indiana, with local residents, public officials, and law enforcement agencies sharing messages of grief and gratitude. Outside the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, community members have placed flowers, candles, and American flags in his honor — a touching tribute to a man who gave his all in service to others.
Counselors and chaplains are being made available to support both the Sheriff’s Office staff and the Skinner family during this devastating time. Funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced in the coming days once finalized by the family.
