Officer Injured, Suspect Killed in El Paso Upper Valley Shooting
EL PASO, Texas — A Sunday afternoon in El Paso’s normally quiet Upper Valley turned violent when an officer-involved shooting left one man dead and a police officer injured, according to the El Paso Police Department.
The incident unfolded just after 3:00 p.m. on Passo Via Street in the 6400 block, where officers were dispatched following reports of a family fight and assault in progress. Upon arrival, officers encountered a volatile situation that escalated quickly into gunfire.
During the exchange, one El Paso Police officer was struck and rushed to University Medical Center, where she remains in stable condition. The suspect was also shot during the confrontation and later died at a local hospital from his injuries.
Sgt. Robert Gomez, a spokesperson for the department, confirmed that the injured officer was accompanied by a partner at the time of the incident. Both are now part of an active investigation being led by the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit, the Texas Rangers, and Internal Affairs.
“There was no chase that I’m aware of, not related to this incident or any other,” Sgt. Gomez stated, addressing misinformation circulating on social media.
The shooting stunned residents of the neighborhood. Ricardo Torres, who lives nearby, shared his disbelief: “I opened the app and saw the street, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is right here next to us.’ I’m very surprised—this is a very safe neighborhood, in our eyes.”
William Ennis, another neighbor, said he initially mistook the police helicopter overhead for Border Patrol activity. “At first, I figured it was Border Patrol, because it was really low. But the more I looked, the more I saw it was a police copter.”
The scene remains active, and Passo Via Street is expected to remain closed to traffic until at least Monday morning as authorities continue to process evidence and piece together the chain of events.
