COURT DOCS: Suspects in Deadly Wells Street Shooting Claim Self-Defense
FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Two teenagers charged in the fatal shooting of a 59-year-old man on Wells Street last week are claiming self-defense, according to newly filed court documents.
Jayden Cosme, 18, and Jaylen Murray, 19, are both facing murder charges in connection to the death of Laron Duane Rosse, who was shot and killed in the 2600 block of Wells Street.
Court documents reveal that all three individuals were inside Rosse’s home prior to the shooting. A witness at the scene told police that a heated argument erupted, escalating into a physical altercation during which Cosme and Murray were seen assaulting Rosse.
According to the same witness, Murray allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and fired multiple rounds, striking Rosse. The suspects then reportedly fled the scene.
Following their arrests, Cosme and Murray both admitted to being involved in the altercation, telling police that they had gone to Rosse’s home and ended up in a fight. Murray claimed he shot Rosse in self-defense, according to the court filings.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and both suspects are scheduled to appear in court for initial hearings on Wednesday.
The case remains under review as prosecutors evaluate the self-defense claims against the evidence collected.
