PHILADELPHIA, PA — A tragic shooting early Monday morning has claimed the life of Derwin Darnell Joseph Matthews, Jr., 31, in the heart of Center City Philadelphia. The incident has left a community grieving and police searching for answers.

According to the Philadelphia Police Department, officers responded to a report of gunfire shortly before 2:45 a.m. on June 2, 2025, in the 200 block of Camac Street—a narrow alleyway situated near several popular bars and nightlife spots. Upon arrival, officers discovered Matthews suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors worked to save him. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:20 a.m.

The fatal shooting occurred just hours after thousands gathered in the city for Pride Weekend celebrations, casting a shadow over what had been a joyful and vibrant weekend for many.

Derwin Matthews, Jr. is remembered by loved ones as a bright and caring individual with a warm heart. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from friends, family, and members of the community who knew him.
