Stabbing Attack at Salem Homeless Shelter Injures 12; Suspect in Custody

SALEM, OR — A peaceful Sunday evening turned tragic in downtown Salem when a violent stabbing attack at the Union Gospel Mission homeless shelter left twelve people injured. Authorities have arrested 42-year-old Tony Williams, who is accused of launching the unprovoked assault.

The Salem Police Department reports that the attack occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. on June 1, when Williams entered the shelter’s lobby and began conversing casually with both staff and guests. Without warning, he allegedly pulled out an eight-inch knife and began stabbing those around him.

Panic quickly spread through the shelter as people scrambled to escape or restrain the attacker. Emergency responders were called to the scene, and multiple individuals were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

“It was chaos. People were screaming and running. He just snapped,” one witness recounted.

Officers arrived promptly and were able to detain Williams without further incident. Authorities say that no motive has been confirmed at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Union Gospel Mission, which provides food, shelter, and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness, is considered a vital resource in the community. In a statement, the organization expressed deep sorrow over the events and gratitude for the quick response of law enforcement and first responders.

“We are heartbroken by what occurred and are focusing our efforts on supporting our guests, staff, and volunteers through this traumatic experience,” the shelter said.

Counseling services and trauma support are being offered to those affected. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Salem Police Department.

As the community reels from this senseless act of violence, many have taken to social media and local events to show solidarity with the shelter and those impacted.
