In Loving Memory of Sensei John Lucas

Smithtown, New York, It is with profound sadness that Smithtown Judo announces the passing of Sensei John Lucas, a beloved friend, mentor, leader, and warrior within our community. Sensei John dedicated more than 60 years of his life to Smithtown Judo—as a fierce competitor, a wise instructor, and a guiding force for generations of judoka.

His fighting spirit, unmatched leadership, and unwavering commitment to the art of judo shaped the very soul of our dojo. To know Sensei John was to witness integrity, discipline, and compassion in action. His presence on the mat and in our hearts will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to learn from and stand beside him.

Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on. With honor and trust, Sensei John has passed the torch to Sensei Joe Prizzi and Sensei Jason Brodsky, who will continue the proud tradition of excellence that he so passionately built at Smithtown Judo.

The entire judo community mourns this tremendous loss. We are forever grateful for Sensei John’s impact on our lives and the countless students he inspired.

Rest in peace, Sensei.

Your spirit lives on in every throw, every lesson, and every life you touched.
