Trenton Shooting Leaves One Dead, Several Injured; Investigation Ongoing

TRENTON, N.J. — Andrew Coates, 41, of Trenton, tragically lost his life Friday night following a chaotic shooting that left several others injured, city and county officials confirmed.

According to Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey and Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson, police responded around 11:25 p.m. to a ShotSpotter activation near North Olden and Ohio Avenues. As officers approached the scene, their patrol vehicle was struck by a car driven by Coates, who had lost control in the midst of the shooting. He was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.

A civilian was also injured when Coates lost control of his vehicle. The man and two responding officers were treated at the hospital. Authorities later learned of a second gunshot victim who checked into the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg; that individual remains in stable condition. Two unoccupied vehicles and a residence on Indiana Avenue were also struck by gunfire, though no one inside the home was harmed.

Coates’ sudden death has left friends, family, and neighbors grieving. Loved ones described him as a devoted father, caring friend, and a supportive member of his community. “He always looked out for those around him,” said a family member. “We are heartbroken by this loss.”

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact MCHTF Detective Jennifer Eyster at (609) 789-7346 or Sgt. Roberto Reyes at (609) 256-0997.

Authorities continue to piece together the events that led to Coates’ death, while the community mourns a life tragically cut short.
