ELGIN, Texas — A late-night crash in Elgin turned tragic when a multi-vehicle collision claimed two lives and left several others hospitalized. The incident occurred at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the intersection of US Highway 290 North and Saratoga Farms Boulevard, according to the Elgin Police Department.
Authorities said the crash involved multiple vehicles, two of which quickly became engulfed in flames following the impact. An officer, who happened to be refueling at a nearby QT gas station, was among the first on the scene and rushed to assist, pulling victims from their vehicles before fire and rescue crews arrived. His swift actions helped save lives as emergency responders mobilized.
Despite those efforts, 66-year-old Robbie Carter of McDade was pronounced dead at the scene. Carter’s vehicle was among those severely damaged in the collision.
Several patients were rushed to area hospitals, with multiple medical helicopters and ambulances dispatched due to the number and severity of injuries. Among those transported was 13-year-old Yareli Padierna of Elgin, who tragically succumbed to her injuries after arriving at an Austin-area hospital.
Four additional individuals remain hospitalized with serious injuries. Their conditions have not been released publicly.
The Elgin Police Department confirmed that their Crash Reconstruction Team, alongside Crime Scene and Command staff, responded to the incident and worked through the night to document evidence. Investigators have not yet released details about what caused the crash, and the case remains under active investigation.
The deadly wreck has left the community in shock, as residents mourn the loss of a respected McDade man and a young teenager from Elgin whose life was just beginning.
