TORONTO, Canada — Graham Greene, the celebrated Oscar-nominated actor known for his breakout role in Dances with Wolves and dozens of other film and television appearances, has died at the age of 73.
According to multiple reports, Greene passed away Sunday afternoon, August 31, 2025, at a hospital in Toronto.
Greene’s agent, Michael Greene, confirmed the actor’s passing in a statement to Deadline, remembering him as “a great man of morals, ethics and character” who “will be eternally missed.”
Born on June 22, 1952, in Ohsweken on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada, Greene began his acting career in 1979 with a role in the Canadian drama The Great Detective. By the late 1980s, he had built a reputation as a versatile performer before earning worldwide recognition for his Academy Award-nominated performance as Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s 1990 epic Dances with Wolves.
Greene’s career flourished in the decades that followed, with memorable roles in Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Green Mile, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. He also appeared frequently in television, further cementing his place as one of Canada’s most distinguished actors.
Greene is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, along with his daughter and grandson.
