KIRKLAND, Wash. — The Kirkland community is mourning the loss of Sheila Stanton, who was killed when a car slammed into a Grocery Outlet on Sunday afternoon.
The crash happened just after 2 p.m. at the Bridle Trails Shopping Center. According to the Kirkland Police Department, a 74-year-old woman drove her new car through the front of the store, striking shoppers inside. Police believe the driver may have been unfamiliar with the vehicle, and while early indications suggest it was an accident, investigators are awaiting blood test results to determine whether impairment played a role.
Tragically, Stanton did not survive her injuries. She was remembered Monday by her congregation at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Kirkland, which called her a “much-loved parishioner” and expressed deep sorrow at her loss.
A mother and her 12-year-old son were also struck in the crash. Police said the boy suffered major injuries while his mother’s were severe; both are expected to survive.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the driver was injured or will face charges. The investigation remains ongoing as the community rallies around Stanton’s family and prays for the recovery of the injured victims.
