NECKER ISLAND, VI — The man who died late Friday night, August 29, 2025, following an accident on Necker Island has been identified as 35-year-old Sihle Somdaka, an executive sous chef from South Africa.

Somdaka was reportedly involved in a crash while driving an electric buggy shortly after leaving a farewell party at the Great House for departing guests. According to reports, he lost control of the vehicle while navigating a steep hill and sustained a severe head injury. He was found unconscious, and island medics, along with personnel from nearby Moskito Island, administered CPR before he was transported by boat to Peebles Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital on Tortola, where he was later pronounced dead.

A father of two, Somdaka had previously worked at prestigious establishments worldwide, including Opa Doha in Qatar and Razzmatazz in Kuwait, before joining the team on Sir Richard Branson’s private island.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) confirmed that the incident is under active investigation. Acting Commissioner Jacqueline E. Vanterpool extended condolences, stating, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. This is a tragic event, and the RVIPF is committed to a thorough investigation.”

Another individual involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
