NEWBURY, Ohio — A Newbury man tragically lost his life on Labor Day in a collision involving a motor scooter and an SUV. Authorities have identified the victim as Paul Buttari Sr., 69.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. at the intersection of Elm Road and State Route 87. According to law enforcement, a 2018 Ford Escape driven by a 19-year-old stopped at a stop sign on Elm Road before proceeding onto State Route 87, colliding with Buttari’s 2007 Honda Helix motor scooter. Buttari was ejected from the scooter and transported by Newbury Township EMS to UH Geauga, then flown to UH Cleveland, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities noted that Buttari was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and the teenage driver was unharmed. Officials also confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

The community is mourning the loss of Paul Buttari Sr., remembered as a cherished member of Newbury, whose life came to a tragic end on what should have been a day of celebration. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, and it is not yet known if any charges will be filed.
